Mark says ‘ I will never forget the first time I went to Bells beach. I was a young teen, and the annual Rip Curl Pro competition was on. Rather than pay money to get in, my friends and I walked across paddocks and through some bushland to sneak in for free. We got there just in time for one of the greatest surfing heats of all time ; Mark Occhilupo vs Tom Curren. I couldn’t believe that the larger than life surfers who we had watched videos of over and over again were walking right past us to have their heat. We sat on the cliffs and watched in awe. It was perfect weather. Sunny, about 20 degrees C, and a light breeze. A magical moment in time that I rewatched many times on the surf movies that featured the heat in the future. Bells is an iconic spot for surfers, but also a special place for the First Nation people. The area was known as Wada Wurrung land and was once an Aboriginal meeting ground, where the Wathaurong people would gather to trade. The iconic cliffs are like a natural amphitheatre. I wonder how long back people have sat on the beach and watched perfect waves roll in.?
